| In
October '97, The Fat Controller was sacked by another Band, the
G-Men. Two of the members of the G Men, namely Ants, Sax Player,
and Untrustworthy Neil also left at the same time, as they did not
wish to be treated in the same way. Within 18 hours another band
was formed, and christened 'The Gangsters of Ska'.
The
name was derived from a sub-title by the Editor of Hot Licks Review,
a magazine based in Cleveland , whilst describing the G-Men -
Quote 'The G-Men - Gangsters of Ska'.
Untrustworthy
Neil knew a drummer, Psycho Mark Lager and Ants spotted O.B.'s
name in the Superads as an experienced vocalist looking for a
band. The Fat Controller met with O.B. and agreed to give it a
go. Blind Art was an old friend of the Fat Controller and the
band was born with ½ the band from the North of Middlesborough,
and the others from Cleveland. Rehearsals, 15 or so, were held
at the Zetland Hotel, Marske by the Sea, and by December the band
was ready to gig.
The
Fat Controller from the word go, had begun to fill the diary and
the slow climb to recognition was underway. Unfortunately the
bass player, Untrustworthy Neil, had appalling shifts and could
only commit himself to a few gigs. The Drummer, Psycho Mark Lager
wasn't a happy chap, and unfortunately this started showing itself
on and off stage.
